THE WINN FAMILY Hans Winn, the patriarch, started performing at the age of six in Cologne, Germany. He and his siblings grew up in the circus traveling throughout Europe and eventually started their own family thrill show business that included high wire feats and motorcycle stunts with fire. The Winn family moved to the United States in the 1960’s residing in Los Angeles, CA. Hans, then 30, spent the next five years training and performing for various circuses, state fairs and festivals with his siblings. As time went on, the family act grew to include spouses and children and they eventually started their own show in the United States called Circus Europorama directed and produced by Hans’s younger brother, John Winn. As the years went on, members of the Winn family decided to go there separate ways. John Winn retired from show business and moved to Oregon becoming a full time Broker. Helen, the eldest of the two sisters, also having interests in real estate, became a successful businesswoman. Marianne, the youngest sister, remained in LA where she went to school to become a Massage Therapist. Karl, the youngest brother, took some time off from the circus to study business and aviation. He received his pilot’s license while managing to travel around the world performing his world famous “Sky Walk”. Hans, like his brothers Karl and John, received his pilot’s license. | |

He with his wife and children remained the only sibling completely dedicated to show business. His wife Henrietta Schickler was the daughter of a European circus family that owned and operated Schickler Circus in Europe. She performed horseback riding with her brothers and was a professional Ballerina. After she met Hans, she began to perform high wire stunts and the slide for life hanging by her neck. They had three sons Mike, Karl and John. The children began performing with their mother and father at a very early age and became accomplished circus performers. After Henrietta passed away, Hans was faced with the challenge of raising his three boys alone. The family continued performing for several years before he met and fell in love with Roverta Figueroa. Roverta grew up in California and had always been fascinated by the circus. She used to spend her summer vacations in the circus with friends of her family. At eighteen she officially joined the circus as an aerialist. . She and Hans met while on tour with the Royal Hanneford Circus. They married in 1977, had three children Nickolaus, Natalia and Hans Peter. The family moved to Sarasota, FL in 1982 and has called it home ever since. The Winn family is accredited with many firsts, including Karl Winn’s flight into history as being the first to perform a running forward double somersault inside the revolving wheel. Nickolaus Winn, at the mere age of 8, represented the Unites States in Paris, France at the Circus Olympics where he was a finalist. Mike Winn was featured in David Frost’s Guinness Book of World Records for the “Steepest Incline High Wire Walk”. Their daredevil feats include the Motorcycle Incline, Wheel of Destiny, Globe of Death, Skyscraping Sway Poles, High Wire, Slide for Life, Aerial Silks, Lira, Hula Hoops and other talents. Today, still performing are Hans, his wife, his six children and grandchildren making them eight generations of circus performers. They are known as the Winn Family operating under the name ”Winn’s Thrills of the Universe” with their slogan “The Sky’s the Limit”.
